Mini Grilled Cheese Hearts (Printable version)

Bite-sized grilled cheese sandwiches in heart shapes, ideal for parties and lunchboxes.

# What you need:

→ Bread

01 - 6 slices soft white or whole wheat sandwich bread

→ Cheese

02 - 6 slices cheddar, American, or your favorite melting cheese

→ Butter

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# How to make it:

01 - Using a small heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out two hearts from each bread slice (12 hearts total). Repeat with cheese slices to create 12 cheese hearts.
02 - Place one cheese heart between two bread hearts to form each mini sandwich.
03 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the exterior surface of each assembled sandwich.
04 - Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches buttered side down and cook for 2–3 minutes until golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for 2–3 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is crisp.
05 - Serve warm while cheese is melted and bread is crispy.

# Expert tips:

01 -
  • They disappear faster than you can make them, guaranteed
  • The mini size means you can sample different cheeses without commitment
02 -
  • The cheese hearts can slip around while cooking, so press them firmly between the bread
  • A too hot skillet will burn the butter before the cheese melts
03 -
  • Chill the bread for 15 minutes before cutting if it is too soft
  • Use the leftover bread crusts to make croutons or breadcrumbs
